Not very sure, but instead of using the default FFWD/REW buttons, you could 
program your own buttons that simply changes the frame-rate in the forward or 
reverse direction. For example, the default frame-rate is say 24 frames/sec 
(FPS), changing it to 240 FPS in play mode will cause the movie to appear as if 
it's being fast-forwarded (It will play 10 times faster) an a standard VCR, but 
without the typical horizontal bands that you see with a real VCR. For rewind, 
the problem could be a bit hard - if a play mode in the reverse direction is 
available then you could apply the above method to that too, to emulate rewind.
