Hi Everybody, Question of the Day is :- Describe the role of inetinfo.exe,
aspnet_isapi.dll and aspnet_wp.exe in the page loading process. Its a big
question for the ASP.net developers that how the unmanaged code(INETINFO.EXE or
W3WP.EXE) is initiating, invoking and communicating with the .Net managed
environment.

In IIS .aspx is mapped through an ‘Application Extension’ (aka. as a script
map) that is mapped to the ASP.NET ISAPI dll - aspnet_isapi.dll.
Every request that fires ASP.NET must go through an extension that is
registered and points at aspnet_isapi.dll.<o:p></o:p>

The execution process of a request will vary depending on the IIS Version.

Routing the request from IIS to aspnet_wp:

In IIS 5, hosts aspnet_isapi.dll directly in the inetinfo.exe process .
When the first ASP.NET request comes in the DLL will spawn a new process in
another EXE – aspnet_wp.exe – and route processing to this spawned process.
This process in turn loads and hosts the .NET runtime. Every request that
comes into the ISAPI DLL then routes to this worker process via Named Pipe
calls.<o:p></o:p> In IIS 6, IIS 6 always creates a separate worker
process – an Application Pool – and all processing occurs inside of this
process, including execution of the ISAPI dll. Application pools are
highly optimized for HTTP operations by directly communicating with a kernel
mode HTTP.SYS driver. Incoming requests are directly routed to the appropriate
application pool. In IIS 6, ISAPI extensions run in the Application Pool
worker process. The .NET Runtime also runs in this same process, so
communication between the ISAPI extension and the .NET runtime happens
in-process which is inherently more efficient than the named pipe interface
that IIS 5 must use.
