Hi,

I'd like to get both USB and PCMCIA readers working under Linux for secure sign-on.
I'm currently using the smartcard_netlogin software and pcscd with Schlumberger
Cryptoflex 16K cards. I need the drives to be internal, so I'm using PCMCIA for
laptops and readers that fit in the floppy bay for desktop PCs. Living in the UK,
I've only ordered locally, but I guess international shipping's possible if necessary.

All seems fine with both the RS232 readers I have (ACS ACF30S and GemPC410-FD) - the
only problem being that the serial cable has out through the back of the PC since my
Mini-ITX motherboards only have on-board USB pins, not RS232. However none of my
USB/PCMCIA readers have been as successful. I'm not suprised that they're less well
supported than RS232 readers since there's more to go wrong and the technology is
newer, but it sounds like other people out there are using them so I wondered if
anyone could let me know which readers are known to work please?

My ACS ACF30U doesn't even register as a USB device, and David said he was aware of
this - I'm awaiting responses from their technical support. I have drivers for a
Castles EZ910PU reader, but they seem unstable so only simple operations have worked
so far. I'm providing feedback to the developers. Finally my GPR400 PCMCIA card
nearly works, but a few more complex operations fail. David confirmed that the driver
is "rough around the edges", but I don't know if there are any current plans to work
on this.

If anyone's had direct experience of a USB (floppy bay style) or PCMCIA reader fully
working with open drivers, preferably with Schlumberger Cryptoflex 16K cards, I'd love
to hear about it!

Thanks,

Sean Atkinson.
