The following is from tiday's issue of a UK newsletter, SCN Daily News,
which is about smart card topics:

Linux To Make Smart Card Debut

The open source operating system (OS) Linux is emerging as a strong
potential platform for future Smart Card development, according to a senior
executive at China MobileSoft.

Speaking at a recent Gemplus Developer Conference, China MobileSoft's Chief
Technology Officer (CTO) Wang Jiping said that Linux is gaining even greater
traction and penetration for the embedded systems market than the PC market
where it is a fierce rival of Microsoft's Windows.

Wang said that a Linux COS (Chip Operating System) would be an ideal
solution due to the limited Random Access Memory (RAM) and Read Only Memory
(ROM) in the Smart Card which would benefit from the Linux kernel which is
small and modular by nature and freely available.

Wang noted that there is no Linux COS on the market yet, but claimed that
there were Linux developers working on it already.
