Hello all, my name is derrick and I am working on a senior design
project
dealing with smartcards, mobile computer labs and wireless networks. The
gist of the project is to have 20 laptops in a "cart" and to have a
wireless network configuration on the cart so that the setup can act as a
wireless mobile computer lab. There will also be a server on the cart to
make networking and team collaboration possible.

I am really interested in smartcards and learning how to program them,
so I decided to add smartcards to the project as my senior design
project. There were a few possibilities where this could fit in.

1) Instead of having multiple keys for the cart (or lack there of) we
could use smartcards as a controlling mechanism for unlocking and
accessing the cart.

2) Teachers can save their server settings to a smartcard or to the
server and use the smartcard to access their setup. Or even if they hold
a quiz in the class using the server, they can download the info to the
card, maybe as a virtual gradebook. I think the best option is for
another project I'm working on, called the Controlled Testing
Environment (usefull in programming classes) where the teacher allows
the students to use computers and a network for compiling code, yet
wants to reserve interaction between students or with the rest of the
internet. They can setup thier firewall and save the configuration to
smartcard for later controlled tests.

3) Useing the smartcard for strong encryption over the wireless network,
or for accessing the wireless network. Where each laptop would have a
card and reader, only laptops with our specified smartcards could get
the network

4) Using smart cards to unlock configurations on personal computers. In
some classes, a teacher may want the students to only have access to
certain folders or programs. So the smart card will control what areas
of the computer the student has access to. This could help in beginning
computer classes, where students might be utterly confused.

For any of these ideas I was wondering the plusses and minuses of the
different smartcards that others have worked with. Also If you have any
ideas or comments on ideas, I am happy to hear those as well (honest
opinions welcomed, if you think this is crap, please tell me so i can
move on). Also do you think these ideas are going to be difficult to
implement (keep in mind, i'm a newbie). So far the main aspects we've
been looking at with ideas are memory on the cards, and any processing
power the cards might have. I'm not sure if theres more we should be
considering or not.

Lastly if there are any Tutorials on smartcard programming or encryption
with smartcards please pass along weblinks or email me with pdf/ps
formats.

Thanks so much for your time

derrick
