I see an analogy to the problem I removed with the patch I already sent to the list. The patch made the pcscd daemon multireader-capable, but not multithreading-capable, using a round-robin strategy. Here you need multireader capability *before* you get multithreading capability and as a precondition to it. So it is a good use case for my patch. Did you try it out?
The delay becomes a real problem if it is longer than the timeout of the reader driver. I experimented that if the pcscd already talks to just two readers with mutexes, then the third reader will never get a chance!
