My CCID driver [1] works with "a lot" of recent readers. It is free software and PowerPC binaries [2] are also available for Debian GNU/Linux as well as 10 other architectures. The driver works under MacOS/PowerPC so should also work under Linux/PowerPC. Some other readers also have free software drivers.
