Hi Nathan,

GemPCTwin is a CCID reader which means that it implements a standard set of commands (CCID is a USB class). Two drivers exist for these types of readers:
1- http://homepage.mac.com/jlgiraud/ifd-CCID/ifd-CCID.html
2- http://alioth.debian.org/projects/pcsclite/

I wrote the first one and Ludovic Rousseau wrote the second one.

Nb 2 has all the latest bells and whistles but requires that you update the PCSC framework bundled by Apple with the OS. This might break some functionality delivered by Apple. Also, Nb 2 uses libusb instead of the native Apple USB API.

Nb 1 works with the PC/SC framework bundled with the Mac OS X (Jaguar or Panther) and uses Apple's IOKit. It is slightly less feature-rich: it does not support T=1 cards with some types of CCID readers. However for the GemPCTwin, the driver supports T=1 cards. It also comes as a pre-compiled .pkg installer (Panther installation requires a manual step detailed on the site).

Cheers,
JLuc.
PS: The GemPC400 is a PCMCIA reader that would require a dedicated kernel module. I am not aware of the existence of one.

Our internal IT dept. is suggesting GemPCTwin USB and GemPC400 as current
readers. Apparently, we have, at some time, also used GemPC430 and
GemPC433-SL readers, though the MacBU has historically been exempted from
this policy. There exists a GemPC430 driver for OS X on the musclecard.com
website. Are there any current projects to address drivers for the other
models?

Secondly, it seems that GemPlus has posted Linux drivers for the GemPCTwin.
If there isn’t already some work being done on those drivers, can someone
comment on the amount of difficulty in massaging the Linux drivers into
Darwin drivers?

Thanks,
Nathan Herring
