I have similar symptoms on my Pegasos, which is also powerpc based. I believe this to be a bug either related to endianness (although I couldn't think of any case where endianness matters, as usually only bytes are moved around) or due to the different stack layout. The problems get a lot worse if more readers are attached, and even more so if some of the readers attached aren't readers (my mobile phone also uses a pl2303 converter).
As I don't have any Intel box, it would be nice if some people would run pcscd under valgrind and report any reads of uninitialized data, or out-of-bounds accesses.
