You, known, US govt defense contractors/workers with some influence on US
govt id program managers, the single most beneficial action that one could
take to promote FIPS201/PIV - the standard that is - would be to release the
muscle-related CAC plugin (binary or source) to the open source community,
with BSI API.
Release it the supporting card edge docs etc, muscletool command line for
the CAC cardedge/wire-format plugin, etc. Also, release the CAP file for the
GC applet, that works well on some popular cards.
This would teach folks so much of the core knowhow, for FIPS 201/PIV, and
remove sop much of the mystery. We stop having to read hard to decode pages
of descriptions of meta-architecture, and just get back to writing 10 line
of 7816-4 scripts that send a few byte instructions for TPDUs, send over
PC/SC to the GC applet instances!
