Which Smart Card Reader?

I am thinking about GemPC Serail interface based reader for
this discussion. Reason: It is claimed to be ISO-7816
complaint. GemCore based PC/SC reader drivers are available
as open source.

You could be able to use my CCID driver [1] with this reader. I never
used it with HPUX but it should not be too complex if the serial port
interface on HPUX is "standard".

Though I am not sure why PC/SC would be
necessary, i.e. what do I get with it or what do I
loose without it.

See my next point.

Question Of PC/SC?
------------------
I would really appreciate, if some one could help me clarify,
* why one needs to have PC/SC component.
* What is it that its doing? and What would happen, if it's
  not there.

Have a look at [2]. You can also have a look at pcsc-lite
documentation and [3] in particular.

I recommend you to install the softwares you plan to use so you can
understand their dependency.

And yes, OpenSC is a good choice. You will also find a lot of
documentation there.
