I'd go for 2.1.2, 2.2.2 is too new and too, let's say, unstandard
still for a new developer to become familiar with.

You're not forced to use Eclipse to become familiar with the kit. Any
decent text editor will allow developing simple applets.

I suggest getting a copy of Zhiqun Chen's book to become familiar with
the issue.  Also track [1]my links on the subject.
