Aha, this is interesting. Actually, when I logged into my system just now, it seemed to work! :-) I need to understand why though, to make sure the problem doesn't happen. > On Ubuntu pcscd is started by a PC/SC client, not by the init script. > See http://ludovicrousseau.blogspot.fr/2010/09/pcscd-auto-start.html > > The init script should do nothing. But I have not checked. Aha, there might be something here... I upgraded this system from 10.10, via 11.04 and 11.10, so perhaps the pcscd init script should have been disabled at some point, but didn't due to this long upgrade path? I use etckeeper, so I am able to verify what happened along the way, and there are have been committed no changes to /etc/init.d/pcscd since 10.04, the only difference is a file attribute change, it seems. One difference I just noticed between my laptop and the other system is that on the laptop, the link is rc2.d/S20 whereas on the other system, it is rc2.d/S50. Anyway, I'll try to investigate further when I get home, but if this makes things clearer, I'd love to hear it.
