Aha, this is interesting. Actually, when I logged into my system just now, 
it seemed to work! :-) I need to understand why though, to make sure the 
problem doesn't happen.

Aha, there might be something here... I upgraded this system from 10.10, via 
11.04 and 11.10, so perhaps the pcscd init script should have been disabled 
at some point, but didn't due to this long upgrade path? I use etckeeper, 
so I am able to verify what happened along the way, and there are have been 
committed no changes to /etc/init.d/pcscd since 10.04, the only difference 
is a file attribute change, it seems. One difference I just noticed between 
my laptop and the other system is that on the laptop, the link is rc2.d/S20 
whereas on the other system, it is rc2.d/S50. 

Anyway, I'll try to investigate further when I get home, but if this makes 
things clearer, I'd love to hear it.
