I don't expect many readers to have serials readable from the chipset. It's bound to be more expensive to manufacture and most go for minimal manufcaturing costs. Either you'll have to build your bench using a type of cardreader that does.. or..
make the power to the readers selectable from software, power up the readers one by one, see them appear on the USB bus and associate reader to id in that way. It would mean your bench would get more complex, more expensive, and would take longer to "boot", but it should work with all types of readers, USB hubs, kernel modules.. etc..
