ok, the real problem was that I was calling shutdown() on the entry resource
even though it hadn't been initialized yet. I had created the resource object,
but that's just an object allocation, no actual init work is done in the
constructor. I removed the call to shutdown( ), so it should now work w/o the
RuntimeException.
