The reverb aproach does exactly that, without synchronisation
Your "window" is the fade in of the effect or reverberation time, and the fade out of the input signal
than your allpass diffusors randomize that "grain" in and over time
when you do the same with explicit grains you're just mimicking a reverb, with more overhead.

theres is no need for sophisticated correlation algorithms to phase align the grains
which btw is the opposite of what you want in this case
