My first home-studio reverberation constructions, both analog and digital are from the 80s, and I've always been impressed with those wonderful high grade musical products with preparation for the speaker and listener room preparation and those great sound scapes coming from all kinds of professional tools.
Only recently I've been able to create some of that myself, but that's not based on endless tuning of basic reverb source code, so I can't give you information on that.
