Proposal: New URL relation types: Has blog at <URL>, Has LiveJournal
at <URL>
Why needed?: As of today, musicbrainz have the relation "Have the
MySpace page at". MySpace is not only blog service in universe,
neither it does have monopoly on music people/bands pages.
I like it. Essentially it means to generalize the current MySpace
relationship type. IIRC someone on mb-users suggested to put the most
important blogging sites as sub-types of the general blog type.
I think that some generalization is definitely needed here. MySpace is
certainly not the only blog service - in fact, I would not really
categorize it as a blog per se (although it does have that
functionality) but more as a social networking or online community
site. LiveJournal is more blog-oriented, but also has a lot of these
social networking aspects.
Since you can have multiple URLs with a relationship, I see no reason to
add a special LiveJournal AR, even as a subtype (what about Blogger,
WordPress, Xanga, etcetera etcetera?). You can easily tell
which it is by the URL in any case.
Instead, I would suggest three things.
1. add a new "Has a blog at <URL>" AR - this would cover any site where
an artist keeps a weblog, whether it is on their home page, at a record
label page, or on a social networking site like MySpace or Xanga. The
URL for this AR should be specific enough that it takes you directly to
the blog summary, where this is feasible. (This can be tricky at a site
like MySpace, where the blog.myspace.com URLs don't have the username,
but instead look like
http:://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=1320485
- I had to manually strip off the &MyToken=XXXXXXXX which had my MySpace
id embedded in it).
2. change the description of the myspace AR to be "Has an online
community page at <URL> - depending on the impact, we might want to
change the name of the AR itself from myspace to community or something,
but this is really an underlying detail that wouldn't be visible for
most users. The URL for the AR would be the primary/home page for the
artist on that community site. Of more importance would be to update
the Wiki entry for the AR type - this should probably be
OnlineCommunityRelationshipType.
3. update the URL recognition feature to recognize the common domain
names for major blog and community sites, LiveJournal, Blogger, Xanga,
etcetera, and set the AR type accordingly. If the myspace AR name is
changed, this will have to be done in any case, I expect.
