What I'm thinking of is where the release group itself is a demo. Often they contain relatively rough material and more polished versions are released on a later album. They tend to be used to get a record label and sell to early fans. It's different to promo - the promo for an album is usually the same tracks or radio edits packaged differently and given away to radio stations, journalists, etc. Promo is rightly a release status. e g http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/55399028-fe94-48c7-867a-3ad4fae84569 http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/410a2faa-9608-37c6-83e5-90af4e4445fc We already say "Any secondary types should apply to most of the tracks on the releases within the release group. It's OK if some of the tracks do not fit the type (for example, if a live album has some bonus studio tracks), as long as the type applies to the releases overall." So a demo track doesn't make for a demo release group
