THE CANADIAN ISLAMIC CONGRESS
MEDIA COMMUNIQUE

January 24, 2006

ISLAMIC CONGRESS ELECTION REPORT CARD DECLARED A SUCCESS
-- CAMPAIGN RESEARCH PROVES BOTH EFFECTIVE AND INFLUENTIAL

Highlights:

- CICPAC's "hold your nose and vote liberals" saved the Liberals in 2004.

- CICPAC's "vote candidates not parties" helped MPs from all parties
  elected in 2006.

- Early election Exit Polls show a majority of eligible voters (more than
70%) among Canadian Muslims cast ballots.

- Among candidates who received a positive "A" or "B" grading by CICPAC,
  73% were elected.

- Among candidates who received an unsatisfactory "F" grade, 33% were not
  elected.

- Today CICPAC wrote to all elected MPs; "We congratulate you on being
elected, and for accepting the great responsibility to represent all
Canadians in your riding. Canada is living in challenging times and it is
a challenge to serve the country in such times. We hope and pray for your
  success."

- And to those candidates who were not elected CICPAC wrote "Although you
were not elected in Monday's vote, we would like to express our thanks to
you for taking up the challenge and putting such dedicated effort into
your election campaign. Because of people like you, Canada's democracy
  will flourish."

- CICPAC will work with the new government and elected MPs on seven top
  priorities:

1. To thoroughly review the Anti-Terrorist Act, and achieve security with
   rights.
2. To bring the proposed Canadian no-fly list and existing no-passport list
under full court supervision, with due process and transparency.
3. To bring our military personnel home from Afghanistan and pass
legislation ensuring that Canada will no longer send its forces abroad
except under United Nations command, and then only for peacekeeping
   purposes.
4. To speak out against Israel's aggression against Palestinians and
American aggression against Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and Syria.
5. To speak out against U.S. president George Bush's violation of American
   citizens' human and civil rights.
6. To pass legislation resulting in electoral reform.
7. To broaden and strengthen Canadian social justice policies regarding
health care, homelessness and child poverty.
