ISLAMIC CONGRESS PAYS TRIBUTE TO PASSING OF UK SCHOLAR DR. ZAKI BADAWI --
DEATH OF EMINENT LEADER AND REFORMIST A PERSONAL LOSS FOR CIC PRESIDENT
The Canadian Islamic Congress today issued a tribute to the life and work
of renowned British scholar, Dr. Zaki Badawi, who passed away in London,
England, on Jan. 24 at the age of 83. He had been on his way to deliver a
lecture Tuesday morning when he was suddenly taken ill and rushed to
hospital, where he reportedly died at 11:00 a.m. local time.
"The Muslim world is mourning an eminent intellectual and advocate; and I
am also mourning a friend," said CIC national president Dr. Mohamed
Elmasry. "His sudden death is a great shock... he will be terribly missed."
Badawi, who was born in Egypt in 1922, studied at Cairo's prestigious Al-
Azhar University, where he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees,
as well as academic awards for excellence. At Al-Azhar, he also began a
celebrated teaching career that would take him to universities around the
world, including Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, and Nigeria. From the mid-1950s,
however, he was based mainly in Britain, where he continued to both study
and teach, earning a doctorate in contemporary Islamic thought.
For decades, Dr. Badawi was a leading reformist figure, who urged his
adopted country's Muslim minority to participate fully in British life. He
became widely respected by fellow scholars, spiritual leaders, journalists
and politicians for his tireless dedication to cross-cultural understanding
and interfaith dialogue.
A prolific author, speaker, broadcaster and advocate, Dr. Badawi was also
instrumental in creating the Sharia (Islamic Law) Council to help reconcile
conflicts between Islamic law and the British civil code.
At his death, Badawi was principal of the Muslim College in London, which
he founded in 1986, and also chairman of the Imams and Mosques Council of
Britain, a position he'd held since 1984.
Condolences have poured in from faith leaders in Britain and abroad,
praising Dr. Badawi's wisdom, grace and dignity during a difficult period
of history for the world's one billion-plus Muslims.
"He touched and inspired numerous lives," added Dr. Elmasry. "There could
be no better tribute than to continue his work toward peace, justice and
harmony for all people of faith."
