ISLAMIC CONGRESS CONDEMNS DESTRUCTION OF SAMARRA GOLDEN MOSQUE
-- CALLS FOR END TO SECTARIAN VIOLENCE AND AMERICAN OCCUPATION OF IRAQ
The Canadian Islamic Congress is calling for an end to Iraq's escalating
Islamic sectarian violence that followed the destruction of the 1,200-year-
old Al-Askariya mosque in Samarra.
The shrine -- also known as the Golden Mosque for the prominent gilded dome
which was totally destroyed by explosives -- is revered as the burial site
of two Shi'as imams. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
"Sectarian violence is mutually self-destructive and totally against the
teachings of the Qur'an," today's CIC statement said. "We unequivocally
condemn the actions and motives of those responsible for the loss of lives
and properties."
The CIC called for unity between Shi'a and Sunni Iraqis. "Muslims in Iraq
should be uniting against the American occupation of their country, not
destroying the heritage of their shared faith or killing one another," the
statement continued. "The real enemy is an illegal occupation by an
oppressor that believes in divide-and-conquer."
Although both Shi'a and Sunni Iraqi leaders have urged calm and appealed to
all Iraqis not to pursue reprisals and vengeance, violence has continued in
the wake of the Al-Askariya explosion.
"It is time to stop such self-defeating violence and its poisonous cycle of
revenge," the CIC statement concluded. "This is not about justice and it is
not faithful to the example of the Prophet."
CIC is Canada's largest national organization representing both Sunni and
Shi'a Muslims.
