In the name of Allah, the Most-Merciful, the All-Compassionate

"May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon You"
Praise be to Allaah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with
Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah
guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one
can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness
that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Islamic Ruling on Menstruation

Formal Prayer:

Women are not allowed to make formal prayers in state of menstruation.
Aisha reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Stop formal prayer
when your menses begins. When it is finished, wash off the blood from your body
and return to formal prayer. " (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Eid Prayers:

In the case of Eid prayers, all women are enjoined to participate in the
gathering, regardless of their condition. However, only those who are able to
make formal prayer should join the Eid prayer.
In Muslim countries where the Eid prayer grounds are surrounded by a wall,
menstruating women may come inside the enclosure, but sit or stand behind the
rows of praying women.

Um Ateeyah said: "I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say that the
unmarried virgins, mature women and menstruating women should witness the good
and the religious gathering of Muslims, but the menstruating women should keep
away from the prayer-ground."(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Fasting:

Menstruating women are exempted from fasting, regardless of whether they feel
themselves weakened by it or not. Allah has not permitted them to fast in His
infinite wisdom, which the believers are required to accept unquestioningly.
Abu Saeed Al-Khudree quoted the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as
saying, "... a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses" ( Sahih
Muslim).

However, the menstruating woman must make up the missed days after Ramadan.
Aishah said: "When we would have our menses during the lifetime of the Prophet,
we were ordered to make up the days of fasting that we had missed but were not
ordered to make up the prayers that we had missed."(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Hajj Rites:

With regard to the rites of Hajj, menstruating women are allowed to perform all
of them, with the exception of the formal prayers and the rite of walking
around the Kabah seven times (tawaaf).

Aisha said: We set out with the sole intention of performing Hajj and when we
reached Sarif (a place six miles outside of Makkah), my menses began. The
Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to me while I was crying and asked,
"What is the matter with you? Has your menses started?" I replied, "Yes." He
said,"This is something which Allah has destined for the daughters of Adam. So
do all the rites that the pilgrims do, except Tawaaf. ( Sahih Al-Bukhari &
Sahih Muslim).

Aisha also related that she told the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
that Safeeyah bint Huyay began menstruating (before Farewell Tawaaf) and he
said, "Perhaps she will delay us. Did she make Tawaaf?" We replied, "Yes" He
then told her to go ahead." ( Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Touching and Reciting The Quran:

Most scholars have prohibited menstruating women and people in a state of
sexual defilement (janabah) from reciting the Quran or touching it. However
some of them are on the opinion that she can recite the Qur'an without touching
it except with her hand coverd.

Ibrahim an-Nakha'ee said, "There is no harm in menstruating woman reciting a
Quranic verse." It was also the opinion of Imam Malik [ Fath Al Baree,vol.1, p.
305]
.
Again the menstruating woman is allowed to say rememberance of Allah. Um
Ateeyah reported that they were instructed to let the menstruating women come
out for the Eids and say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest).
(Imam Al- Bukhari quoted this anecdote to show that since menstruating women
were instructed to speak Allah's names and his attributes, they should also be
allowed to read the Quran, in which Allah's names and attributes are also
mentioned.)

Divorce:

It is prohibited to pronounce divorce when a woman is on her menses. Instead,
she must be in a period of purity (between menses) in which her husband has not
had sexual relations with her.
Abdullah Bin Omar reported that he had divorced his wife while she was
menstruating and his father had asked the Messenger of Allah about it. He
replied, "Instruct your son to take her back and keep her until she is clean.
Then he should wait until she menstruates and becomes clean again. If he then
wishes to keep her, he may do so without having sex with her. That is the
period which Allah prescribed for divorcing women." ( Sahih Al-Bukhari & Sahih
Muslim)

The pronouncement of divorce during menses is still counted as pronouncement.
Younis bin Jubayr asked Ibn Omar, "Is the pronouncement of divorce counted if a
person divorces his wife while she is in a state of menses?" He replied, " Why
not? Was he helpless or foolish? " ( Sahih Al-Bukhari)

However, one who does so has committed a sin. When Ibn Omar was asked about a
person who divorces his wife while she is menstruating, he replied, "If he
pronounced one or two divorces, Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) would
command him to take her back, allow her to respite until she enters her second
menses, allow her respite until she is purified, then divorce her without
having sex with her. If he had pronounced three divorces, he would have
disobeyed his Lord's command regarding divorce, but she would be irrevocably
separated from him." (Ibid).

Menstruating woman touching a CD-ROM containing the Quraan and reading Qur’aan
from it ?
Given that no Quraan appears on the surface of the CD-ROM, the rulings
concerning the Mushaf do not apply to it, as is also the case with Quraan
recorded on audio cassettes. On this basis, there is nothing wrong with you
running this CD-ROM and reading Quraan from the screen.
As for ahaadeeth, the menstruating woman is permitted to touch the books of
Hadeeth and to read from them.
