~ Hadith ~

Deeds committed in the state of ignorance

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him):

A man said, "O Allah's Apostle!
Shall we be punished for what we did
in the Prelslamic Period of ignorance?"

The Prophet (peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) said,

"Whoever does good in Islam
will not be punished for what he did
in the Pre-lslamic Period of ignorance
(before embracing Islam)

and whoever does evil in Islam
(after having come within the fold of Islam)
will be punished for his former and later (bad deeds)."

(Sahih Bukhari: Book #84, Hadith #56)

Hadith - Sahih Muslim

It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas'ud
(may Allah be pleased with him) that

Some people said to the Messenger of Allah
(may peace & blessings of Allah be upon him):

Messenger of Allah, would we be held responsible
for our deeds committed in the state of ignorance
(before embracing Islam)?

Upon this he (Prophet peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) remarked:

He who amongst you
performed good deeds in Islam,
He would not be held responsible for them
(misdeeds which he committed in ignorance)

and he who committed evil
(even after embracing Islam)
would be held responsible or his misdeeds
that he committed in the state of ignorance
as well as in that of Islam.

(Sahih Muslim: Book #001, Hadith #0217)

 My Lord!
Grant me that I should be grateful for Thy favor
which Thou hast bestowed on me and on my parents,
and that I should do good
such as Thou art pleased with,
and make me enter, by Thy mercy,
into Thy servants,  the good ones.
