You can't do this. A syllable may not contain blanks. The result
is that unmatched braces get passed to TeX, and if there is one thing
that upsets TeX more than anything else, it's unmatched braces.
(Or unmatched dollar signs.) Instead write
{\it{that\/}}
etc.
