In a private discussion with Christian Mondrup we found that MusiXTeX's
\ovbkt and \unbkt is what he was looking for ;-)
Maybe that \ovbkt and \unbkt may help Rick Kavinoky, too, or at least
\varline which is the basis for the two others.
