A pull request is nothing more than what its name says. Therefore in order to have different pull requests one needs to create a branch for each of them.
One can also cherry-pick single commits (after pulling the stuff into some temporary branch). Would it be possible to send new/updated pieces as patches (git format-email) to the mailing list (to be imported with git am)? Then you can take one patch at the time.
