Comment:

 Actually, the spurious ^M don't seem to be the sender's fault, unless they
 are MIME-encoded in transit. CR and LF, whether part of CRLF or used
 themselves, may not be encoded, but Internet mail could be CR or LF or
 CRLF and mutt needs to be able to deal with that.
