With the patch, the trailing spaces continue to be included if mutt's $text_flowed option isn't set. So anybody not trying to send format=flowed messages would not be affected by it.

For people who do want to send flowed messages, I'd think that editor support would be almost a prerequisite. Going without, would be tedious and error-prone. Once using an editor with at least some support for this format, I believe that this would be a large improvement.

Also, although having a space there does improve the appearance, it isn't necessary. Mutt will parse the header content just fine if it occurs immediately after the colon. And if you exit to the compose menu and reenter the editor it will even insert the missing spaces.
