I manage my .index files by hand for 15 years now, not only
because I don't have pearl on every machine. I always use
tabs for the sake of legibility and this used to work
at least until 1.5.21 (no idea when it got broken between
1.5.21 and 1.5.24).
Apart from bringing back the old behaviour there is no
harm done (as a tab will hardly appear in any of the
fields one day).
