I'm not convinced the scope of the change is worth the payoff.

Reading your "Why" section in the README, it feels like the central
goals are solved by the windows patch.  The proposal's approach may be
more flexible, but I don't know that it addresses a strong need compared
to the probable size of the change.

As always, I invite others to chime in and tell me how I'm wrong and am
being too conservative, but in general I'd like to see "evolution", not
"revolution" in the codebase.
