A short post scriptum: in mutt_xtitle,

printf "\033]0;$(echo "$1" | sed 's/%/%%/g')\007" > /dev/tty

can be replaced by:

printf "\033]0;%s\007" "$1" > /dev/tty

And it would perhaps make sense to add a mutt_xtitle.c file in the contrib 
directory, to avoid spawning a shell process too often:
