Try this:

:<fetch-mail>

(I didn't look up the function name, if you have it right then the above
should work.)

You shouldn't need any locking for Maildir, tell maildrop not to use any
locking for that folder.  I forget how to do that, I don't use
maildrop, but I remember seeing just yesterday some references to
locking issues in the maildrop man page.  It's probably all documented
there...
