I'm guessing, as I noted before, that he wants the benefit of edit_headers,
but doesn't like having to move the cursor around just to give the required
basic info. ie, he wasn't getting prompted for To: and Subject:.
As noted, you can get "the best of both worlds" by setting edit_headers and
unsetting autoedit.
