Set the MAIL environment variable to the location of your inbox or put
'set spoolfile="$HOME/INBOX"' in your .muttrc file.  As far as I know,
there is no such thing as "pine-format".

sendmail is an MTA (message transfer agent), so it doesn't determine
where messages get delivered, that's the MDA's (message delivery agent)
job.
