Upgrading?

I am very happy with my version of mutt  1.0.1i 

Is their reason to upgrade, and if I were to, how would I go about it? 
I am more familiar with upgrading through rpm packages, but I assume 
you go through a standard building of a tarball and the binarys get 
written over...
