Hi,
   To me, that looks to be a malformed pattern for save-hook.  Does this
work better for you:

save-hook '~s fm-news' =freshmeat_list

The way you have it specified, I think it is going to look for a mail
address containing "~s\fn-news", but I'm not sure about that.
