I personally use the builtin mail notification in gkrellm.  If you
already use gkrellm, or think you might want to, you should know that it
doesn't interfere with mutt,  can optionally launch getmail/fetchmail
before it does its count, has animation/sound/external command on new
mail support and all other kinds of goodies.  You might find that it
meets your requirements.
