What about replacing both lines by a stricter single one:
| subscribe `awk '!/^(#|$)/{gsub("\.", "\\\\\\\\.", $2); printf("^%s$ ", $2)}'
< ~/.mutt/lists`
This should give the perfect:
| subscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED]
