I just went through this last week. ncurses is somehow broken in 10.6.3 - I found references to it, specifically about the arrow keys on the internet. The solution for me (also found on the internet) was to copy over libncurses.5.4.dylib and libncurses.5.dylib from my Time Machine backup of 10.6.2. I saved the newer versions, but suspect I won't ever need them.
