Regarding long quotes t-prot [1] might be useful. It can cleanup
mails to make them more readable (compress long quotes, remove
empty lines, remove TOFU, remove overlong signatures, etc.) and
provides many options to configure it to your needs. It's used in
mutt as a $display_filter.

I use it all the time and can't think of reading my mails without
it.
