Well, I found today that if I remove the New flag, the Read flag becomes visible if I had read the original message, so that flag is not actually lost, but only hidden by the New flag. Thus, I have now a reasonable solution: I can tag all my X-labelled and unread messages and toogle the New flag of all of them.
