finally having some time on my hands, I have identified the ~/.muttrc lines causing my concerns: That "r" for "reply" and "L" for "list-reply" both reply to the list rather than "r" to the mail author. I have commented out all lines beginning with "subscribed" and "list" and my mutt now functions properly. I don't understand this but am going to install earlier builds of mutt (I have a few that were built specifically for opensuse) until I find the culpret.
