I see it sometimes too when checking/fetching IMAP headers
(I have thousands of messages in INBOX).

Probably it has something to do with asynchronous events
happening (like incoming new mail etc) while mutt is fetching
headers.

Also I used to have coredumps much more frequently with mutt
from /stable and /testing Debian. Now I use /oldstable and
coredumps are rare.
