Just such a change became necessary here some years ago. (Don't remember which mutt version did it.) The only significant difference in my color tree green default is that "default" syncs the background with whatever is there, so that running mutt in e.g. "xterm -fg yellow -bg darkslategrey" works and can be changed in the xterm, for consistency across applications.
