there are no "new/" or "cur/" directories in mbox.

yes, in ~/.muttrc I have:
  unset mark_old       # i don't care about whether a message is old

but that keeps "mutt" from marking posts as "old"; squirrelmail still
marks "old" as does the andriod mail clients on my phone.
