Make sure you keep your system up to date. If you get far enough behind, it can be impossibly to transition to the modern release. I would advocate keeping the OS update physically separate from the rest in order to be able to scrub it with a clean install should the need arise. Distinct filesystems is enough of course.

It's very cool, but it can be very frustrating when there are conflicts or build issues.
