Well I had a similar issue. IIRC, INBOX was always there regardless for me, but I had to use the full path to get anything else to work. There was a bug (since fixed) in NeoMutt where it wasnt' expanding = or + to the full path. Sounds like the same issue to me here in Mutt. https://github.com/neomutt/neomutt/issues/485
