I suspect this is more to do with either your particular recipients happen to use clients that support it (Mutt, Thunderbird are the only ones to my knowledge) or that, since ancient times e-mail variously gets malformatted by various clients under a wide range of circumstances, and people have just become accustomed to it and ignore the problem.
