I just send an empty body when I ubscribe/subscribe. And yes, to answer your initial question, I use mutt to send the (un)subscribe email. You should have gotten a confirmation email a few minutes after, which you need to reply to. That email mentions that the subject and body don't matter. So I leave them as-is. If you still have issues, reaching out to postmas...@kernel.org may be a better avenue to seek help rather than the mutt mailing list. This address is also posted at [1].
